An island in the Pacific may not be the obvious choice for a ski test. However, Mount Washington Alpine Resort on Vancouver Island brags about one of the deepest average snowfalls in Canada at more than 10 metres annually, some of the best tree skiing around, an efficient lift system, consistently soft snow and one of the few ocean views from a ski run. (It’s also Technical Editor Ryan Stuart’s home hill.) In early April, Mount Washington hosted Ski Canada’s test of 2020 skis. A varied group of skiers—ski shop employees, race coaches, ski bums, instructors and happy liftees—tested more than 20 pairs of skis. The conditions were perfect for putting everything from race carvers to freeride sticks through their paces: hard and firm in the morning, steadily transitioning to slushy and soft in the afternoon. Find the results of the test throughout our 2020 Buyer’s Guide. And big thanks to Mount Washington Alpine Resort and all our testers.
