ARMCHAIR SHREDDING AT THE VANCOUVER MOUNTAIN FILM FEST

Reading Time: 2 minutes

The “Shred Show” has a snow-themed night you can watch from anywhere.

Who is NGR? How can an artist merge their passions for sliding and art? And does deep powder transcend language barriers?

The Vancouver International Mountain Film Festival’s The Shred Show, a collection of ski and snowboard films, will answer these questions and more. You can watch the 12 snow-focused movies in person on March 3 in North Vancouver and from your couch or office (we won’t tell) virtually throughout the week long festival, February 23rd to March 3rd.

WHO IS N.G.R.?

Several of The Shred Shows are Canadian productions. N.G.R.: The Fabulous Life of Nancy Greene Raine highlights the life and times of Canada’s winningest ski racer (and introduces us to how cool her initials are). Using interviews with illustrious Canadian skiers and archival footage, it’s a light, fast-paced look at N.G.R.’s lasting legacy. “She’s done more for skiing in Canada than anyone else I know,” says Hugh Smythe, the former president of Whistler Blackcomb, during the film.

MORE ON THE HICK KID FROM SASKATCHEWAN

Darkhorse peels back the mystery of Joe Lax, a humble big mountain snowboarder living in Pemberton. Before you skip this one because Lax rides sideways, know that, while he loves heavy metal music, this is not a punk rock snowboard film. Directors Brian Smith and Cameron Sylvester mix personal interviews with amazing footage of Lax shredding big lines to explain how a self-declared “hick kid” from Saskatchewan made his way to the top of the Coast Range and what it takes to stay there.

JA-POW!

For anyone dreaming of Ja-Pow, don’t miss Lexicon. And for everyone else, you will be booking a trip after seeing this film. A team of Arc’teryx ski athletes from all over the world meet in Japan and make sweet work of the famously bottomless, uber light snow. The movie questions whether skiing transcends the skier’s language barrier, but mostly viewers are left jealous of how much fun the skiers are having.

THE SHRED SHOW

In addition there’s the story of a 520-kilometre ski traverse of Austria’s Tyrol, injured British marine’s learning the ski, and the world premiere of a Canadian split-boarder attempting to preserve the experience of turning in Antarctica in a painting. The Shred Show is one of several themed nights during the event, which also includes workshops, panel discussions and presentations.
