The Mata defines a newish, hybrid sub-category of skis: free-carving. They blend a slalom ski radius and a carving ski construction with an all-mountain width and feel. The unique design leads to a unique look. Exhibit A: The Mata is asymmetric with a shifted shovel profile, a dramatic sidecut and a notched tail. “It will turn heads in the lift line,” noted Mark Lassan. Construction is all about smooth and stable: a full poplar core, Titanal strips and a rubber layer. The unique shape and construction required a learning period for most testers, but once dialled in, the consensus was that the Mata is a super-responsive ski that can handle full-throttle groomers and doesn’t mind a romp through the bumps. Not an everyday driver, not a groomer-day specialist, but for those who like to play with their turns, a fun option to add to the quiver.

Ryan Stuart
Ryan Stuart has a ski for every possible condition and a jacket to match. Well maybe not quite, but the magazine’s Technical Editor has more than enough of both and can’t wait to test out whatever is coming next. When he’s not testing skis or writing the buyer’s guides, you can’t find him exploring his bumpy backyard on Vancouver Island. @ryan_adventures
