Smartwool Intraknit 3D
GRANNY WAS RIGHT
From running shoes to socks, knitting is enjoying a moment in Granny’s sunroom. High-tech knit construction allows for fewer seams, adaptable fit and customizable performance. One of the best examples is Smartwool’s new Intraknit 3D Performance Apparel. The company started with its mainstay, merino wool, and blended it with polyester to increase durability and decrease dry time. It’s also soft, warm and incredibly wicking. Then Smartwool hooked it up to a new knitting machine that crocheted it into baselayers that fit better than anything else we’ve tried. The medium tops and bottoms fit several people of different shapes, as if Aunt Bet had custom made them for each person. The high-tech process allowed Smartwool to adjust the knitting to specific areas of the shirt or leggings within the same piece of fabric: mesh in sweaty places, ribbing where joints bend and tighter weaves for more insulation. The pieces are light for their warmth and super-comfortable to wear. From $132; smartwool.com
