Anyone who craves the thrill of a G-force turn will enjoy the Thunderbird. A full sidewall, two sheets of Titanal, full camber and a raised binding plate create a stable and powerful platform to lay trenches. “Incredible edge hold and silky smooth at speed,” reported Glenn Westrup. “Gives confidence for fast transitions in the turn.” But for such a burly ski it is surprisingly forgiving, probably thanks to the beech and polar core that is stiff in the centre but transitions to softer flexing at the tips. The ski wants to finish every turn—it was hard to release the tail into a skid—but turn initiation was easy and, under skilled feet, it was a blast in the bumps, too.

Ryan Stuart has a ski for every possible condition and a jacket to match. Well maybe not quite, but the magazine’s Technical Editor has more than enough of both and can’t wait to test out whatever is coming next. When he’s not testing skis or writing the buyer’s guides, you can’t find him exploring his bumpy backyard on Vancouver Island. @ryan_adventures
