When making the QST Echo, Salomon started with a blueprint for its popular QST 106 freeride ski, then lightened up its construction with sustainable materials. The result is a ski with a karuba and poplar wood core, cork and basalt fibres in the tip and tail, and recycled content in the double sidewalls and topsheet. The Echo is about 300g lighter per ski compared to the regular QST, but loses little in downhill performance. The Echo 106 floated through knee-deep fluff, ploughed through spring schmoo, and ripped in the mountain’s most challenging conditions. “It’s not the lightest touring ski,” said technical editor Ryan Stuart, “but it’s one of the most lively and powerful backcountry boards I’ve tried.”
