The Backland feels good to tour, as well as to buy. In a life cycle analysis, Atomic determined that raw materials are the biggest contributor to a ski’s carbon footprint. As a solution, it sourced local poplar wood for the Backland’s core, recycled materials for the top sheet, and reduced fibreglass, resin and metal throughout. Along with waste and emissions, these changes also cut weight. For climbing, the notched tip makes attaching a skin fuss-free. On descents the ski is far more capable than its feathery build would suggest. In mixed spring conditions it gripped the ice. And a bevelled edge around the Backland’s tip increased floatation, helping the ski feel wider in fresh snow and heavy slush.
