Ski Test 2011: Adventure All-Mountain

Reading Time: 18 minutes

All-terrain skiing, moderate speeds, medium turns

By Test Editors IAN MARCH, RON BETTS, ANNE SLADE and IAIN MACMILLAN

Silver Star provided the perfect All-Mountain testing ground for Ski Canada in early March with just what these skis love: a wide range of snow, conditions and terrain. From packed-powder to firm-’n’-slick groomers, bumps, crud and powder in the trees, 51 models of skis did more runs over two days than most do in a year. Far and away, the largest category of skis sold today is All-Mountain and although Ski Canada breaks the colossal group into something more manageable—“Adventure” and “Expert”—the dividing line can be a bit blurry. Testers repeatedly commented that many skis in the Adventure group could easily have been tested with the Experts, for instance—a compliment to the overall quality of what manufacturers offered for us to test. But whether you’re from the East or West, if you’re still looking for that perfect, do-it-all ski for your one-ski quiver, it’s on these pages.

To match the expectations for this group, testing was not as fast or aggressive as in the high-performance Expert All-Mountain category. The same assessment of comfort in ungroomed snow was checked, with special attention to such things as how balanced they felt (sweet spot) and general good manners in less-than-perfect conditions. Testers want these skis to respond to every demand, and also be manageable and predictable. Waist 75-85. (Fall 2010 issue.)

.. tested by men only Great edge grip, stability and carving ability are the hallmarks of the AC 30. It has a smooth, predictable and powerful feel that gives confi dence and encourages the skier to take chances and let ’er rip leaving pure, clean arcs. While all this precision and power are great on-piste, the AC (All Conditions) 30 lives up to its name, blasting through crud and bumps, and having good fl oat when the conditions get deeper. This is a great all-mountain ski with power to spare. “The ski has great drive through all snow conditions. It pushes through cut-up snow like a 250 linebacker in a peewee football game. It has great control and versatility from long to short turns.” » RON BETTS“This is a solid, powerful ski that likes to rip. It has great edge grip and stability, yet is still fun in bumps and off-piste. Better suited to a strong pilot. Stay on top of it. Great fun.” » IAN MARCH
