After two and a half years of construction, the world’s highest 3S cable car has started schlepping skiers to dizzying heights in Zermatt, Switzerland. The Matterhorn Glacier Ride is a nine-minute, nearly four-km ride to the Klein Matterhorn at 3,883 metres aboard 25 luxe cabins, each with 28 seats. Four of the cabins are pimped out in Swarovski crystals and have glass floors that look 200 metres down to spectacular glacier views. With the paint barely dry, plans are already underway to connect the enormous Swiss-Italian combo of Zermatt/Cervinia-Valtournenche with Monterosa, ultimately offering the world’s largest ski domain: 540 km of pistes on one pass.
