As a women’s-specific ski in Stöckli’s Montero family, the AW stands for all-mountain women. Or, said Deanna Papineau, AW could be short for awesome. “Sooo fun, sooo stable, soooo awesome,” she wrote on her test card. “It was really, really, really hard to stop skiing on these beauties.” Stöckli combined a lightweight wood core with a sheet of Titanal from edge to edge, tip to tail. To make the ski a little more forgiving and softer-flexing at the ends, designers cut an S-shaped curve into the metal at the tip and tail. It made the ski relatively easy to turn, while leaving plenty in the tank when it was time to hit the gas. “It’s a Cadillac,” said Papineau. “Trust the ski and it will hold the carve.”
