If you feel the need, the need for speed, just like Goose and Maverick in the original Top Gun, then you are going to love Elan’s Primetime. “This ski likes to go fast!” noted carving maestro Chris Grover, tears still streaming from his eyes. Elan started from scratch to build the carving-focused Primetime family, which includes four unisex skis and four women’s skis. The 55 heads the unisex side. It features Amphibio technology: a designated left and right ski with a thicker stack of wood core on the inside edge and a thinner one on the outside. The design cuts weight and helps focus edge grip. “Getting both skis to arc was easy,” said Grover. “I’m a believer.” Two sheets of Titanal add extra stability and dampness. The 55 ripped through crud and bumps, reported Nigel Harrison—with a caveat: “You need to be confident enough to carve at speed in variable snow.” The 55 rewards focus, energy and technical skill with a fighter jet-like ride.
