This Maverick is a reliable wingman for flying all over the mountain. A few testers praised its lively and turny feel. Some highlighted its big-turn performance and edge hold on groomers. And others found it performed best off-piste and in crud. The consistent take away was that it is versatile and fun. There are a lot of design features that can explain the mixed results: bevelled edging around the tip provides extra flotation and predictable handling in variable snow; a carbon, Titanal and poplar construction creates a stable, powerful and energetic feel; and the rocker profile—tip rocker, decent camber, gentle tail rocker—encouraged easy initiation and smooth turns right through the finish. Opposite to the name’s suggestion, these Mavericks are most at home with a traditional skiing style, but are happy to go wherever a pilot takes them.

Ryan Stuart has a ski for every possible condition and a jacket to match. Well maybe not quite, but the magazine’s Technical Editor has more than enough of both and can’t wait to test out whatever is coming next. When he’s not testing skis or writing the buyer’s guides, you can’t find him exploring his bumpy backyard on Vancouver Island. @ryan_adventures
