Fall 2010
Guest photo editor Martin Söderqvist was formally trained at the Speos Institute of Photography in Paris, and learned to love skiing on family holidays in the Austrian Alps from the age of four. His name is well known around Disentis, Switzerland, where Söderqvist spent many ski seasons before his own little family came along (the 33-year-old Swede is a married father of two little skiers now), but he continues to travel all over the Alps and North America with a heavy camera pack. His images have graced the pages of more than 50 magazines. Söderqvist mixes corporate accounts you'll recognize - Black Diamond Skis, Durango Mountain Resort and Smith Optics - with ones you might not - Swedish ski areas Stöten i Sälen and Funäsdalen, and Zai, Swiss luxury skis and golf clubs. One of several regular contributing photographers to Ski Canada who are Europe- based, Söderqvist gives us some commentary on the following pages on what inspired him to choose each shot, including his own.

The cool angle and the way this shot is split in two make it one of my absolute favourites of the 2010 ski season. Photo by Martin Soderqvist [photo: Martin Soderqvist; skier Martin Webrant at Durango, Colorado]
Apparently Klaus and his crew know where to go, how to deliver and when the conditions are right around the Arlberg. [photo: Klaus Polzer; skier: Simon Abt at Arlberg, Austria]
This photo has it all: evening light, a beautiful view and deep powder in a great composition. [photo: Oskar Enander: skier Reggie Crist at Cordova, Alaska]
I had to look twice to find the skier, but that's what makes this shot so interesting. Overall, a really well-framed photo. [photo: Patrik Lindqvist; skier Andreas Fransson at Courmayer, Italy]
A huge powder plume on a ridge and a big-mountain backdrop make this a classic signature freeskiing shot. [photo: Scott DW Smith; skier Matthias Giraud at Coal Bank, Colorado]
With the snow still hanging in the air from the skier's first turn, you can see that this is real skiing - a trademark of Yves Garneau. [photo: Yves Garneau; skier Nicolas Pasquier at Verbier, Switzerland]
